The U.S. Green Building Council established the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building program in 1998 as a system for rating construction projects based on their environmental sustainability. LEED is now the nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Projects intended to receive LEED certification are awarded points in several areas of environmental stewardship. LEED Certification is divided into 4 levels (Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum), according to the number of LEED points earned.
